The weekly photo challenge this week is background. “In the Background: The places that we pass through day after day, or even once in a lifetime, leave in their small way, echoes and traces of themselves upon us. But so often when taking self portraits or pictures of friends, the places themselves become a soft blurred mush of indistinct semi-nothingness, the limelight stolen by our smiling faces. In today’s challenge, let’s turn the tables. Take a picture of yourself or someone else as a shadow, a reflection, or a lesser part of a scene, making the background, or — as in the example above — the foreground, the center of attention.”
Whilst trying to photograph one of Luciano Neri’s creations, this time his composition is on a mirror, I wound up having a picture of him and his atelier…not quite what I was looking for, but perhaps an interesting addition to this week’s photo challenge!
A Haiku comes to mind!
Reflections dancing
As the skier gets lost ascending
Artist is captured!
I someone has any suggestions as how to photograph this sort of creation on a mirror, I’d love to humbly learn from you…this is driving me mad! 🙂

This is an intriguing photo.
Thanks…I’ve always liked it…but well, it’s not what it is supposed to be 🙂
What are you trying to get out of it or expecting Baste?
Just the skier…the pieces that make up the collage…you can’t really see it for all the reflextion.
Id I’m understanding right. The photo is a mirror and you want the skiers to show up in the mirror?
The photo is of a collage on a mirror, I dont know if you remember a few weeks back, I took up the Weekly photo challenge on Culture…I showed a series of photos of this artist’s work…he does kind of installations on glass, now he’s done some on mirrors. I’ve been trying to photograph them for him…but I’m no pro so I’ve been experimenting…this picture was the very first attempt. So what I want to do is photograph the pieces on the miror without reflecting the whole room. I’ve tried putting a white surface in fronto of the mirrors…putting them on near the floor slightly inclined so they’d reflect the floor…tell you what I’m going to do. I’ll make a blog showing the problem…picture worth 1000 words as they say.
Is it too heavy to take down where it faces a darker and blank wall?
Could be a solution…take an angle shot or I’d be in the photo.
What kind of camera are you using.
Ah…just a little Olympus FE 46…I’m wondering if maybe I couldn’t find a way to do something like you mentioned and then play around with photoshop or something…that might be a solution.
Do you have any control over the flash? If not as long as the room is bright enough that you don’t need the flash, you may get by with shooting and not being in the shot as a reflection.
Yes I can turn it off and have various setting for indoor shots, candle light, night time etc. Soon learned that flash is a big no no with this stuff…I’ve also go two macro settings and a setting that helps the picture not blur through movement…I’ve thought maybe using a tripod and letting it do it’s thing with a long lens opening.

Very curious items in this photo! I love the lighting.
